The governance structure of the SmILES consortium will be embedded in the EERA AISBL legal framework. As SmILES combines research capacities of different EERA Joint Programmes, Energy Storage (ES), Smart Cities (SC), Smart Grids (SG) and Economic, environmental and social impacts (e3s), an established interface with the involved Joint Programmes will be established. The selected partners will help to enlarge the chances for an implementation of this technology in a long run. Additionally in long-term view further EERA-members will be integrated and links to relevant European stakeholders as energy supplier and industry will be developed. Thus SmILES long-term project is part of the largest European energy research initiative running and initiating cross-border projects.

As the partners (AIT, DTU, EDFKIT, VITO) are members (EIFER associated member) of at least two and maximum four EERA Joint Programmes (JP) our proposed activities are seen as a joint proposal with long-term view of defining and establishing common cooperation in JP-overlapping subjects. Supplementing the research activities, SmILES aims to set up a long-lasting, stable and open framework across the borders of single EERA JP. This framework will be initiated by the project members and partners of SmILES and extends the storage and grid integration technologies by integrating or linking other European Energy research Alliance (EERA) members and European stakeholders, energy supplier and industry.

By using the legal structures of the EERA AISBL new research support schemes like shared use of research infrastructures, shared models, databases or a researcher mobility activity will be set up in a standardised way. This will allow for an easier transfer of the expertise and the implementation of future agenda setting actions.
